The Navy is in the process of establishing a project to build submarines on its own, Navy Chief of Staff Hsiao Wei-min said Thursday during a legislative hearing.
According to ruling Kuomintang Legislator Lin Yu-fang, between 2016 and 2019, the Navy is supposed to complete a design blueprint and budget NT$3 billion (US$98 million) to NT$4 billion for the project.
In 2001, then-U.S. President George W. Bush moved to help Taiwan acquire eight diesel-electric submarines, but there has been little progress since then, prompting Taiwan to seek its own solution.
