Foreign submarine in Sweden was 'likely'

The Swedish army staged a large military operation around islands off capital StockholmA foreign vessel was 'likely' in Swedish waters last month, according to a source close to the Swedish military's investigation. The incident has was ranked as one of the most high risk potential military encounters between Russia and the west in a report released on Monday.

An unnamed source speaking to the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper said the Swedish military believed it was "likely" that foreign underwater activity had taken place and classified the case accordingly, in the second most serious category out of a possible six.

Category one would have labelled the case as "confirmed", if there was strong evidence in the form of photographs, sonar or electronic surveillance.
