F-35 jump jets for navy landing ships not worth the cost, study finds

NUSHIP CanberraWith its ski-jump prow, the navy's newest vessel looks just like an aircraft and at 27,000 tonnes is bigger than the navy's last carrier HMAS Melbourne.

So why not go the full distance and turn landing helicopter dock (LHD) vessel HMAS Canberra into a true aircraft carrier, equipped with fast jets rather than just helicopters.

The defence team preparing the new Defence White Paper is considering this question.
