Submarine Modernisation in East Asia: Competitive Strategies

Yuan class SSKThe July launch of South Korea’s fifth Type-214 submarine ROKS Yun Bong-gil – a diesel-electric, air-independent propulsion (AIP) submarine equipped with Haeseong-3 missiles – highlights an important aspect of the growing arms competition in East Asia.

Here, new classes of conventionally powered, diesel-electric submarines (SSKs) are increasingly becoming ‘platforms of choice’ for regional powers, as force multipliers in diverse missions and against superior forces.

This trend reflects the region’s changing strategic realities, shaped by contending trajectories of unresolved historical legacies and emerging security challenges. It is driven, first and foremost, by China’s qualitative military modernisation.
