Taiwan to study possibility of purchasing arms from Japan

Taiwan could study the feasibility of purchasing arms from Japan if Tokyo is willing to sell defense equipment to the self-ruling island, the No. 2 man of the ruling Nationalist Party (KMT) said on Thursday.

KMT Vice Chairman Tseng Yung-chuan said while Taiwan purchases most of its defensive weapons from the United States, it has in the past procured defense equipment from other countries, including buying submarines from the Netherland and Mirage fighter jets and La Fayette-class frigates from France.

"If any foreign country other than the United States, including Japan, is willing to sell Taiwan defense equipment we need, we could study the feasibility of buying such equipment from them," he said.
