An 800-pound gorilla has moved into the Prime Minister’s Office in the form of an “options analysis” of possible replacements for Canada’s aging CF-18 fighter jets.Delivered by the Royal Canadian Air Force last week, the document was supposed to help Stephen Harper achieve his long-standing goal of buying F-35s.
Harper has wanted F-35s since at least 2008, when his Canada First Defence Strategy expressed an intention to acquire “next-generation” fighter jets. The term “next-generation” is used to designate aircraft with low radar profiles (“stealth”) and high situational awareness.
