The House of Commons Defence Select Committee’s report published today (Tuesday) - ‘Towards the Next Defence and Security Review’ - urges the Westminster coalition to make decisions about defence on the basis of strategy as opposed to the domination of budgetary constraints as is currently the case. The report expresses concerns that the Comprehensive Spending Review is leading thinking about defence capabilities - rather than proper strategic decision making – and the Committee have found it: ‘difficult to divine any genuinely strategic vision’ from the MoD.
Commenting on the publication of the report, Angus Robertson MP, SNP Westminster Leader and defence spokesperson said:
“This report, coming only two weeks after a Russian cruiser parked a few miles off the coast of Scotland and waited for a solitary Royal Navy ship to sail 600 miles north from Portsmouth to meet her, is another devastating reality check for the UK MoD.
