The U.S. Navy plans to begin flight testing a new version of its Fire Scout unmanned helicopter in October, a service official said Aug. 13.The new aircraft, also called the MQ-8C, will undergo ground testing at a Navy base in California before having its first flight, most likely during the second week of October, said Capt. Patrick Smith, the Navy’s Fire Scout program manager.
The Navy hopes to begin deploying the new variant in 2014, according to Smith, who briefed reporters at an unmanned systems conference in Washington, D.C.
