Australia's Defence Department to spend more in 2013 and 2014

Despite a massive efficiency drive across the defence force and $25 billion in budget cuts, virtually every agency from the Army to the overseas defence cooperation program will cost taxpayers millions of dollars extra next year.

Buried in the fine detail of the 2012-13 Defence Department budget are the cost summaries and they show that most Defence functions will require much more money from taxpayers in 2013-14.

The only exception is the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO) that suffers a $14 million cutback thanks largely to a $23 million fall in supplier costs.
