
The cry filled the bridge of the U.S. Navy frigate Curts, ratcheting up the pressure at an already tense moment. It was Jan. 24, 1991, and the ship was capturing an island in the Persian Gulf and taking Iraqi prisoners during the early days of Operation Desert Storm.
The Curts also was navigating a mine field when it found itself racing toward a floating explosive at 25 knots.
