3 Aegis-equipped destroyers leave base

Myoko |To prepare for what is widely believed to be a North Korean ballistic missile test, three Aegis-equipped destroyers of the Maritime Self-Defense Force left Sasebo Naval Base in Nagasaki Prefecture on Thursday for the sea around Okinawa Prefecture and the Sea of Japan.

The Defense Ministry said the missile is unlikely to fall on Japanese territory under normal circumstances, but that it will be on alert.

The Aegis-based Standard Missile-3 system, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles above Earth's atmosphere, will do so only if the missile is falling over Japanese territory.
