Opposition Leader Tony Abbott backs state's defence sector if Coalition takes office


Tony Abbott has given the strongest indication yet that the $36 billion next-generation submarines would be built here under a Coalition government.

Winning the work would provide job security for the almost 28,000 people employed in the defence sector and provide a welcome confidence boost for the state's economy in the wake of BHP Billiton's decision to shelve the $30 billion Olympic Dam mine expansion.

The federal Opposition Leader said yesterday the replacement of the nation's submarine fleet was a priority, and came close to matching the Labor Government's commitment to assembling any new submarines in Adelaide.
