Syria: NATO urges a political, not a military, solution

The Geneva plan to resolve the Syrian crisis is vital to a political solution and must be applied, NATO Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen said today.

Rasmussen urged the international community to do everything in its power to put an end to Assad's regime. 'NATO has no intention of intervening militarily', Rasmussen said. 'But a political solution is of the utmost urgency'.

He went on to deny NATO contacts with the Syrian opposition, and also stated that NATO has received no formal request for deployment of AWACS planes along the Turkish-Syrian border.
