A review into alternatives to a Trident successor is likely to include the option of adapting Astute-class submarines to carry nuclear missiles putting it on “standby” and sending it out to sea at short notice.The Ministry of Defence is reviewing the multi-billion replacement programme to appease Lib Dem coalition partners who oppose the like for like replacement, favoured by the Tories and Labour.
The plan preferred by the Lib Dems would see nuclear warheads fired from existing Astute submarines, eliminating the need to replace the Vanguard-class nuclear boats.
