The replacement of Trident will come a step closer this week as ministers start work on new submarines to carry Britain’s nuclear weapons. The Ministry of Defence will announce this week that it has placed £350 million of contracts for the design of new nuclear-armed submarines.
British defence firms will be asked to begin work on the nuclear-propulsion systems for a new generation of submarines.
