Defence at crossroads after cuts

[HMAS Collins]Defence will have to make cuts to its most cherished areas - including the purchase of a dozen submarines and the quarantining of military personnel from job losses - in order to create a realistic military in an era of economic austerity, according to a report released today.

The annual assessment of the defence budget by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute notes that Defence faces a major downturn in resources after a decade of war and budget growth.

"Much has changed over the past four years," writes the report's author, ASPI budget expert Mark Thomson.
