Franklin Miller, who served as an adviser to George W Bush and sat on the National Security Council, told a meeting in Parliament that as a country with global interests Britain could not give up on its nuclear deterrent.He argued that updating the Trident system based on submarines would be the most cost-effective option as the alternative would be Britain developing and building new types of warheads.
He said that the submarines must remain on patrol as they would become targets if they were kept in port.
