Peru backs Argentina over Falklands, cancelling RN visit

[HMS Montrose with a Sikorsky SH-60 Seahawk]The Peruvian government has revoked permission for HMS Montrose to dock at its El Callo naval base, in a decision designed to show "Latin American solidarity" and support for Argentina's claim over the Falkland Islands.

With the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War approaching, Rafael Roncagliolo, Peru's foreign minister, told news agency Andina Peru that Argentina had "legitimate rights" to the territories.

According to reports, HMS Montrose, one of the Royal Navy's Type 23 Frigates, was due to make a short visit to Peru as part of its deployment in the region, something the UK Foreign Office said was "agreed as an act of friendship and co-operation".
