Asia to surpass Europe on defense spending

[J-10 (Jian 10)]Defense expenditure in Asia is expected to exceed such spending in Europe this year, a leading think tank had said.

In its annual Military Balance report, the International Institute for Strategic Studies said that on the current trend defense spending in the Asian region -- which includes China, Japan, India and Australia -- will likely overtake that of Europe in nominal terms during 2012.

IISS Chief Executive John Chipman on Wednesday said, "While the West reduces its spending on defense, Asia is becoming increasingly militarized, as a result of rapid economic growth and strategic uncertainty."
