Asia leading buyer of heavy weapons

Despite the economic crisis, fighter jets, navy ships and armoured vehicles remain in high demand, as figures released by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) show.

Asian countries in particular are driving the growth in the heavy weapons trade, which in 2010 amounted to 300 billion euros.

Who are the buyers and sellers, which weapons are involved and what are the reasons behind it all? Accounting for 44 percent of all arms deals, Asian countries are leading the field.
