An opposition legislator yesterday demanded that the government justify its purchase of six patrol ships for RM9 billion (US$2.8 billion), which it says exceeds the RM6 billion budget approved earlier this year.Malaysian shipbuilder Boustead Naval Shipyard said in a filing with the country's bourse last Friday that it was given a letter of award by the government to build and deliver six "second-generation patrol vessels, or littoral combat ships" for RM9 billion. The vessels are developed by French manufacturer DCNS.
But yesterday, opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) legislator Tony Pua said in a statement that the Defence Minister told Parliament in February that the government had approved RM6 billion for the purchase of the ships.
