North Korea Test Fires Short-Range Missile off Eastern Coast


As mourners Tuesday prepared to visit the body of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il in the palace where his embalmed father is on display, international leaders reacted with everything from caution to satisfaction at the report of Kim's death -- which coincided with North Korea's launch of two short-range ballistic missiles.

An unnamed official told FOX News Channel both missiles landed in the sea and posed no danger to anyone. They appeared part of planned exercises and not related to the passing of the enigmatic "Dear Leader" who inherited power from his father in 1994.

Following the missile test, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta spoke to his South Korean counterpart Kim Kwan-jin early Tuesday morning and the pair agreed to work together to maintain a "strong defense posture," Yonhap reported, citing South Korean defense ministry officials.
