The delivery of the first of Spain's new S 80A submarines has been delayed by possibly as much as two years because of a lack of funds at the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
Instead of being handed over to the Spanish Navy (Armada Española) in 2013, the first-of-class S 80A is now set to enter service in 2015, state-owned shipbuilder Navantia said on 3 November.
No specific month had been set for lead-ship delivery, but the remaining three boats are scheduled to be completed as originally envisaged at one year intervals; this would take the programme through to 2018.
