Fleet of 65 F-35s is ‘minimum’ operational requirement: Natynczyk

F-35 Lightning IIA fleet of 65 stealth fighter jets is the “minimum operational essential” to protect Canada’s sovereignty and effectively deploy on missions abroad, says Canada’s top soldier.

Gen. Walter Natynczyk, chief of defence staff, said the F-35 is the best aircraft to meet challenges of tomorrow, even though the types of future missions are unknown.

“We need to be able to cover the sovereignty of Canada, and like any other operation I’ve seen in my career, the future is unpredictable — totally unpredictable,” he told MPs on the national defence committee, which is studying the readiness and capabilities of the Canadian Forces.
