High-tech hopes of nation sail with new carrier

Shi Lang (ex Varyag)The launch of China's new aircraft carrier has repercussions far beyond the military sphere. It is a result of the rapid improvement in China's industrial and technological development. This represents China's latest technological advancement and brings real hope to China's true modernization.

The rise of a great power depends more on high-tech manufacturing, such as strategic industries, than the low-tech industries China's growth has relied on thus far. Such industries not only create more social conflict, but also block further modernization. For many years, there have been calls for further development of strategic industries, and I would like to echo those.

The sea trial of China's first aircraft carrier, so soon after the endorsement of the 12th Five-Year Plan, which emphasized strategic industries, has a special meaning.
