Chinese admiral denies China will put carrier into service next year


A Chinese admiral said Saturday that China is unlikely to put the refitted ex-Soviet aircraft carrier Varyag into active service anytime soon, dismissing suggestions that the vessel would be commissioned next year as "rumors," a Chinese news agency said.

The carrier, which has been repaired and refitted at Dalian port since 2002 after China acquired the vessel from Ukraine, underwent a five-day sea trial earlier this month.

Rear Adm. Zhang Zhaozhong, speaking during the signing of his new book, said it takes time to put an aircraft carrier into active service, noting that it took France seven years to prepare its first carrier for active service after sea trials.
