Aircraft carrier section begins journey from Clyde to Forth

8000 tonne mid-section of new aircraft carrier heads to Rosyth for final assembly.
The 8000 tonne mid-section of the first Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier is beginning its journey from the BAE Systems shipyard in Govan on the Clyde to Rosyth, where the aircraft carrier will be assembled.

The section, an 8,000 tonne unit named Lower Block 03, was moved out of the shipbuilding hall at Govan two weeks ago. Over the next five days, the block will travel around the north coast of Scotland before arriving into Rosyth on Sunday August 21.

To mark the departure of the component from the Clyde, 50 cyclists set off on a 500-mile charity ride in an attempt to 'beat the block' as it makes its way to the Forth. They will cycle around the north coast of Scotland and expect to reach the dockyards this Saturday.
