British expert to examine troubled subs

Collins class submarineThe federal government has appointed a British defence expert to determine why so few of Australia's Collins-class submarines are available for operations.

"We've got to get more subs into the water," Defence Minister Stephen Smith told ABC Television on Wednesday.

There have been times when only one of the navy's six Collins-class submarines have been available for operations.
