Three Turkish groups vie for landing platform dock contract

Juan Carlos I (L61)The Turkish Navy is planning to buy the design for its first landing platform dock, or LPD, so that it can participate in NATO- and peacekeeping-related overseas amphibious force deployments, defense procurement officials have said

Three Turkish-led groups are currently vying for the lucrative contract to design the LPD, a ship resembling a helicopter carrier that will be worth between $500 million and $1 billion.

Although the prime contractor will be a local company, because of the high degree of technology transfer required, there will also be heavy foreign industry involvement, according to procurement officials.
