The Navy 'shambles': Cuts have left us too weak even to sustain this 'tinpot' war in Libya say admirals

Admiral Sir Mark StanhopeThe Royal Navy is in a ‘shambles’ and the war in Libya has been ‘cobbled together’ because of cuts, senior sailors claimed yesterday.

They said First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope did not go far enough when he warned that the Navy would have to poach ships from ‘home waters’ if the war drags on for another three months.

Retired commanders also demanded that ministers reopen the Strategic Defence Review after Admiral Stanhope, the head of the Navy, criticised the decision to axe Britain’s last aircraft carrier and the Harrier jump jets that won the Falklands War.
