PWR3 Reactor chosen for Trident subs

Vanguard-classThe Pressurised Water Reactor 3 (PWR3) design has been chosen to power the replacement nuclear deterrent submarines, it has been announced.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox had already indicated the PWR3 reactor would give the submarines a "better safety outlook" following a report which suggested problems with current PWR technology could lead to critical failures.

Former head of the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator Commodore Andrew MacFarlane had written that current PWRs were "potentially vulnerable to a structural failure of the primary circuit".
