US military 'manipulating social media'

Social MediaUnited States Central Command (Centcom) has awarded a contract to enable US service personnel to spread pro-American messages in online forums, it has been reported.

A $2.76m contract to provide the "online persona management service" was awarded to Los Angeles-based Ntrepid, and allows up to 50 personnel to control 10 online identities each, according to a report in the Guardian.

The contract calls for each fake identity to have a believable back-story and supporting details as well as technology to prevent the operators being discovered or their true locations revealed.
