Plan to replace Trident ‘to come in weeks’

Vanguard classDr Fox told MPs the programme to replace the Barrow-built Vanguard-class submarines, which carry Trident nuclear missiles, had completed the initial concept studies and an announcement and initial gate approval was expected in the coming weeks.

The comments came in Defence Questions amid a flurry of Trident related probes yesterday, including highlighting splits in the coalition between the Tories and Lib Dems.

At the weekend it was reported Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron told Lib Dem colleagues ahead of their spring conference that they had already managed to stop a full replacement of Trident.
