Unusual Navy ship finishing repairs at Mayport

USS Independence (LCS-2)One of the Navy's newest - and arguably oddest looking - ships, the USS Independence, has been undergoing scheduled maintenance in Jacksonville and will soon return to the high seas.

Officials at BAE Systems Southeast Shipyards on Heckscher Drive said the unusually-designed, all-aluminum vessel has been getting worked over for about a month and will move to the nearby Mayport Naval Station today.

The maintenance to communication, navigation and other equipment will help prepare the warship for its upcoming move to its home port in San Diego, said Vince Stammetti, the shipyard director.
