So long, Los Angeles
In April 1974, the first of what would become the world's largest class of nuclear-powered submarines slid into the James River.
The Newport News-built SSN-688 was the first of 62 Los Angeles-class subs built between 1972 and 1996 by Newport News Shipbuilding & Dry Dock Co. and Electric Boat.
Last Friday, after 34 years of service, the sub underwent its final decommissioning at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Washington.
