HMCS Fredericton will undergo a major retrofit as part of the federal government's $3.1-billion program to upgrade all 12 of its Halifax Class frigates over the next seven to nine years.
Cmdr. John Zorz said the Canadian Navy ship named after New Brunswick's capital city will be tied to a Halifax jetty in October to undergo a year's worth of communications and weapons upgrades, as well as improvements to the ship's amenities for its crew.
Speaking at city hall Monday night, Zorz told city councillors that the work is needed to ready the ship for work in so-called brown waters (performing operations and assignments within 40 kilometres (25 miles) of a country's shoreline).
