Cloud over torpedo deal for Scorpene subs

Black Shark torpedoThe procurement of heavyweight torpedoes for the ongoing gigantic Rs 23,562 crore Scorpene submarine project at Mazagon Docks has come under a cloud with a German company levelling allegations of irregularities in the selection process.

The defence ministry, however , contends there was no wrongdoing in the process to select the Black Shark torpedo of Italian firm Whitehead Alenia Sistemi Subacquel (WASS), a subsidiary of the Finmeccanica Group , over the Seahake torpedo of German company Atlas Elektronik Gmbh .

But with the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) conducting its own inquiry and asking the defence ministry to file a report, procurement of the 98 heavyweight torpedoes worth around Rs 1,000 crore has been put on hold for now.
