New icebreaker will be HMS Protector

HMS EnduranceThe Royal Navy is to replace badly damaged Antarctic patrol ship HMS Endurance with a new icebreaker to be named HMS Protector, it has emerged.

HMS Endurance has been out of service since suffering a catastrophic engine room flood in December 2008.

A Ministry of Defence report in March last year found that inadequate training was to blame for the flood which started as crew were working to improve the ship's supply of fresh water.
