Prague will spend 170 million crowns on modernisation of the NATO airborne warning and control system that operates AWACS radar planes until 2013, under a NAEW&C (NATO Airborne Early Warning & Control) programme the defence minister is to submit to the cabinet on Wednesday.
Simultaneously, the Czech Republic will provide an average yearly contribution of 90 million crowns to finance the system's operation and application.
The Defence Ministry, led by Alexandr Vondra (Civic Democrats, ODS), expects the NAEW&C to enhance Czech participation in the development of NATO's defence capability. By joining the programme, the Czech Republic will send a sign to its partners in NATO about being a responsible and reliable member, the ministry says in the document.
