L'Affaire Agosta

Agosta-90BThe Affaire Karachi is front-page news in France, where two concurrent investigations are ongoing to determine the legality of certain commissions paid on a 1994 defense contract with Pakistan, and whether these played into the gruesome attack eight years ago in Pakistan's commercial capital.

The €825 million contract for three Agosta 90-class submarines reportedly involved a commission of 10 percent split among military and political figures, including, allegedly, Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari. France stopped some commission payments in 1995, when Jacques Chirac became president, and some have suggested this may have motivated the May 8, 2002, suicide attack outside Karachi's Sheraton Hotel.

The attack killed 11 French engineers and 3 Pakistani citizens, and left at least 40 injured.
