Gordon Brown warns closing RAF Leuchars could put Britain in danger

Gordon Brown has stepped into the row over the future of Britain's RAF bases, warning that if RAF Leuchars is shut it could imperil Britain's security.

In only his second attack on the coalition government since leaving office, the former prime minister has signed a letter with Fife's three other MPs to Defence Secretary Liam Fox warning of the impact of the closure. The move is the latest stage of the campaign, led by former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell, the base's local MP, to keep Leuchars open.

It follows revelations in The Scotsman that the base is now a leading option for closure instead of Lossiemouth in Moray and Marham in Norfolk.
