China stages live-firing drills amid tensions

Luyang-II Class DestroyerChina's military has staged live-firing war games in the South China Sea amid heightened tensions over the country's territorial claims in the region.

The annual drills, which were held on Tuesday, focused on a simulated beach assault. Some 1,800 naval forces and at least 100 warships, submarines and combat aircraft took part, while 200 military students from more than 40 countries observed the drills.

The exercises were held along the coast of Hainan, the island province that sits at the north-western corner of the South China Sea across the Gulf of Tonkin from Vietnam.
