The Pentagon has granted the Navy formal approval to continue buying Virginia class submarines from Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Newport News Shipyard and General Dynamics Electric Boat.After passing a series of high-level operational tests, the Virginia class program reached a benchmark called Milestone III, which authorizes full-scale production of the remaining 16 boats in the class.
Northrop and Electric Boat, which have been building the fast-attack subs in a partnership since 1998, were authorized to build the first 14 of the planned 30-sub class before receiving the Pentagon approval.
