USS Virginia arrives today: Shipyard to conduct first major overhaul

USS VirginiaThe Portsmouth Naval Shipyard will begin a new chapter today when the nation's first commissioned Virginia-class submarine steams into the Piscataqua River for what will be the first major overhaul of such a vessel.

Years of planning, millions of dollars of infrastructure improvements and enhanced training at the shipyard will come to fruition mid-afternoon with the arrival of a USS Virginia (SSN 774) that is expected to undergo an estimated 14-month maintenance project.

And don't think shipyard workers don't understand the responsibility that comes with being the first to undertake such a job.
