Secret talks over possible threat of naval base closure

Top-ranking Navy officials have met to discuss a battle plan in case Portsmouth naval base finds itself under renewed threat of closure.
The secret meeting took place yesterday behind closed doors, but The News understands leading members of the senior service fears one of its three bases – Portsmouth, Devonport at Plymouth, or Faslane, on the River Clyde – may be closed because of government cuts.
The move, as part of the ongoing Strategic Defence Review, would be devastating for the south, where more than 17,000 jobs rely on the base.
