NASSCO to slide new supply ship into San Diego Bay

USNS Lewis and ClarkA dreamer who ignored the doubts of the Wright brothers and pushed the Navy to begin flying aircraft off ships a century ago will be celebrated Saturday when General Dynamics NASSCO launches a vessel bearing his name: the Washington Chambers.

The 700-foot supply ship will slide into San Diego Bay during a rising tide, slipping along timbers coated with tons of wax and grease.

The bay is home to three aircraft carriers and one of the world’s largest Navy air bases, making NASSCO an especially suitable site for the launch. The real Chambers helped prove that ships could serve as takeoff and landing strips.
