In the first of three launches planned within eight days from Vandenberg Air Force Base, an unarmed Minuteman 3 missile blasted out of its underground silo — and into fog — Friday morning.The intercontinental ballistic missile launched at 3:03 a.m. from North Base, and the military tracked the lone re-entry vehicle as it traveled some 5,300 miles to a predetermined target in the Pacific Ocean, about 200 miles from Guam.
Friday’s path for the “extended range” flight was about 1,000 miles longer than the typical Minuteman 3 test. It also employed a crew aboard an aircraft, with the Airborne Launch Control System, to send the blastoff command.
