The Spanish Ministry of Defense needs some extra money, and like anyone else, they have come up with the idea of selling something that they don’t want.However, in this case, the item to be sold is a 28-year-old S-72 Siroco attack submarine. The sub needs a complete overhaul which would cost around €25m to keep it in working order for another five years.
The Navy found difficulties to pay for the repair of the S-71 Galerna. Work had to be suspended until funds were raised and it should be complete by 2011.

The Australian Navy is probably looking at this Spanish sub situation closely - as Spain's new S-80 subs feature two highly desirable features for Australia future submarine class. That is AIP and the US sub combat system, used by Spain, which can fire Tomahawk cruise missiles (the "Tomahawk firing system" is a future requirement for Australia).
