Scrapping carrier contract to cost £2bn

the Royal Navy's new aircraft carrierHalting construction of the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers would cost well over £2bn, according to defence analysts - a bill that could scupper any talk of scrapping the project.

The revelation came as Shadow Chancellor George Osborne hinted that the carriers could be casualties of spending cuts.

In addition there would be the cost of laying off 7,000 workers involved in the £3.9bn project, defence experts said.
