Dangerous cadmium confirmed on Australian submarines

Collins classDangerous levels of the heavy metal cadmium have been detected on four Collins-class submarines under repair in Adelaide.

Federal Defence Personnel Minister Greg Combet is expected to confirm the findings this morning and announce a "sample group" of submariners will undergo fresh testing to determine if they have been contaminated.

The Advertiser understands government testing already completed uncovered "unusually high" surface-level cadmium on the vessels.

  1. The debate continues over whether the cadmium in the most important airbourne mode is at dangerous levels.
